POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 5-2 defeat in a non-conference game against Bryant University on Wednesday evening at the McCann Baseball Field. Sophomore designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) hit his first home run for Marist in just his third at bat of the season. He went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in the game.
In his first collegiate start, freshman pitcher Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss for Marist. Cary allowed three runs in one-third of an inning pitched. He drops to 0-2 on the season.
After Helmrich's homerun gave Marist a 1-0 lead after two innings, Bryant answered back with a four-run fourth inning to take the lead in the game for good. Brent Almeida got the win for Bryant, while Mark Andrews got the save.
Senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) had a sacrifice fly for Marist's second run of the game, driving in Helmrich. Prano added two walks. The win improves Bryant to 6-13 on the year, while the loss drops the Red Foxes to 11-10 overall.
Marist's lineup combined for seven hits on the day, six of which were singles. From the fifth inning on, four Marist relief pitchers combined to allow just one run on four hits. Juniors Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) and Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) combined to pitch 2.1 shutout innings while striking out two.
Marist returns to action this weekend when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. to face conference foe Iona in a three-game set. On Saturday, April 3 there will be a doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for noon. The series will end on Monday, April 5 with a 1 p.m. game.
