Marist Water Polo Takes Down Iona And Siena On Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team extended its winning streak to seven games on Sunday, defeating Iona 15-10 and Siena 13-4 at the McCann Center Natatorium on Senior Day. The Red Foxes are now 13-12 on the season and 6-0 in the MAAC Water Polo League, having won their last seven games in a row. Seniors Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) had four goals apiece in Marist's win over the Gaels, with Swartz and Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scoring a pair of goals each against the Saints.

Marist opened the day against Iona. After the Gaels took a 1-0 lead, Barnett, Swartz, and Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) combined for five straight goals to give the Red Foxes a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. St. Omer Roy and Barnett each scored in the second quarter to give Marist a 7-3 halftime lead. The lead grew to six early in the third quarter, as goals by Swartz and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) put Marist up 9-3. The Red Foxes took their largest lead of the game with 3:56 to go in the third as Swartz's fourth goal put Marist ahead 11-4. Iona outscored Marist 6-4 the rest of the way, only to come up five goals short.

Marist seniors scored 14 of the 15 goals against Iona. Sunday had three goals and three assists to go with four drawn ejections. Senior goalie Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made nine saves with two steals and an assist. Swartz, St. Omer Roy, and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had two assists.

In the nightcap, Marist took on Siena. After taking a 5-3 lead after the first quarter, the Red Foxes rattled off eight straight goals to take a 13-3 lead after the third quarter. Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) had two goals during the run as Rampton, St. Omer Roy, Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.), Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.), Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.), and Heather Fellmeth (North Wales, Pa.) also tallying goals. Getchius made seven saves against the Saints with two steals and an assist. Barnett, Crabtree, Swartz, and Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) each recorded two assists.

Marist will return to action Wednesday night with an 8 p.m. game at #11 Hartwick.
