POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Siena 16-5 in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes used a couple of big innings to overcome a 4-3 deficit, scoring 13 unanswered runs, including six in the fifth and seven in the eighth.
Every Marist starter scored a run as the two teams combined for 29 hits. Senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way for Marist, going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs.
The biggest hit of the day came from junior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) whose bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning broke the game open. Pacione went 2-for-5 with a team-high four RBIs and a run scored.
Curylo and Pacione were two of five Red Foxes who recorded multiple hits. Red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while freshman first baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-5 and scoring a pair of runs. The Red Foxes also got some production from the bottom of their order, as senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) collected two hits in as many at-bats while scoring two runs and driving in one.
Freshman left-hander Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) worked 1.2 innings in relief and picked up the win, improving to 3-0 on the season. In all, the Marist bullpen allowed just two runs over the final 5.2, as freshmen right-handers Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) and Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) tossed 1.2 and 1.0 innings of scoreless relief, respectively. Marist red-shirt sophomore starter Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) lasted into the fourth, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.
Siena freshman starter Robert Tedesco took the loss, lasting 4.2 innings and allowing nine runs (one earned) to fall to 3-3. The Saints' C.J. Sohl, who came on in relief of Tedesco, allowed six runs on eight hits in just 2.2 innings.
Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Prano, an error by the Saints' shortstop Andrew Sawyer, and an infield single by Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Siena answered with three of its own in the fourth, knocking Gallagher out of the game. The Saints took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Sawyer.
The Red Foxes' six-run outburst in the fifth came on just two hits, but they still managed to bat around in the inning, thanks to two errors and a couple of hit batsmen by the Saints. Marist didn't need any help in scoring their seven runs in the eighth, as they racked up six hits, including the triples by Pacione and Orefice, who had two hits in the inning.
Siena's pitchers hit two Marist batters in the fifth, three in the eighth, and a total of seven in the game. Designated hitter Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored and was hit three times, raising his season total to 19. The Saints also committed three errors.
With the win, Marist improved to 17-11 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC, while the loss dropped Siena to 13-17 overall and 2-4 overall.
The Red Foxes continue their six-game homestand this Tuesday against Albany in Poughkeepsie. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30.
