LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist women's tennis team remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play after it won all nine matches contested in a 7-0 victory at Rider on Monday afternoon. The Red Foxes are now 5-0 in conference matches this season and 7-8 overall during 2009-10. Freshman Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and junior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) posted 6-1, 6-1 victories at second and fifth singles respectively.
Four other players recorded straight set victories for the Red Foxes. Sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) grew her singles winning streak to five matches and six of her last seven after a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kristina Paich at first singles.
Junior Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) rounded out the singles wins with a third singles triumph over Tricia Ashmore. The final score favored O'Donovan 7-5, 7-5.
The Red Foxes swept the doubles point on Monday as well and have accomplished the feat in each of their last four wins. McCarthy and Sun won at first doubles over Piach and Allison Clay, 8-1. The third doubles trio of O'Donovan and Joanna Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.) won by an identical 8-1 score over Manforti and White. Lukin and Byron defeated Marly Roche and Ashmore.
Marist will return home for a dual match with Fairfield on Wednesday, April 14. First serves are scheduled for 3 p.m. at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion. The matchup will break a first-place tie in the MAAC standings as both teams stand at 5-0 in conference play.
