POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team had a dominant day at the plate and on the mound on its way to a 10-1 victory over Hartford on Wednesday afternoon at the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Fox offense scored 10 runs on 13 hits, and four Marist pitchers combined to allow three hits and one run, while striking out eight in a wire-to-wire win.
With one out in the bottom of the second, John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) at the plate, both runners went, and Hartford catcher Mike Amendola threw the ball over the third baseman's head into left field. Shank scored and Zlotnick advanced to third on the error. Seconds later, Prano drove a base hit to the gap in left for an RBI single to put Marist up 2-0, and extend his hitting streak to 12 straight games.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) left first base on a hit-and-run with Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at the plate. Gauck drove the ball to center and Curylo rounded second and headed to third. Hartford center fielder Rodger Wilmot threw the ball behind the third baseman and Curylo rounded third and beat the throw to the plate for Marist's third run of the game. Gauck advanced to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) to make it 4-0 Marist. Ricky Pacione (Newburgh N.Y.) walked and stole second after Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) flied out. It was Pacione's 10th stolen base of the year, but Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) struck out to end the fourth.
Marist pitchers Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) and Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) had combined to allow no hits and retire 10 in a row until, with two outs in the fifth inning, Hartford shortstop Cory Beahm lined a base hit up the middle to break up the no-hitter. Houseal was able to get the last out with a fly ball to center that Schwind put away to end the inning.
In Marist's half of the fifth, after Shank was caught stealing, Zlotnick followed with a walk. Prano hit a double to left field to put runners on second and third for Curylo, who dunked an RBI single just out of the reach of the diving Andy Drexel in right field to make it 5-0 in favor of the Red Foxes.
In the seventh inning, Marist finally opened the flood gates with a five-run inning. After Marist loaded the bases, Gauck got his second RBI of the game with a base hit in the hole between second and third. Schwind then followed suit with a two-run double to right, and Pacione added a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0. The Red Foxes weren't done however, and Nugent then ripped a single to left center field for Marist's 10th run of the game. The Red Foxes totaled five runs on six hits in the inning.
Hartford scratched across one run in the ninth to end the shut out, but pitcher Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) struck out two to end the game, 10-1. Chapin got the victory to improve to 3-4.
The Red Fox offense went down 1-2-3 just twice in the game led by a trio of standouts. Curylo went 2-for-4 in the game with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Prano went 3-for-5 with a double, one run scored and an RBI and Gauck went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Red Foxes return to action with conference play on Saturday, April 24 with a doubleheader at home against Saint Peter's. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the McCann Baseball Field.
