FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team rolled into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinals on Friday after it blanked #7 Rider 7-0 in the quarterfinal round. The Red Foxes, who are the second seed in the tournament, won all six singles matches in straight sets, and did not lose more than three games in the doubles matches. The contest was played at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.
Two Red Foxes held their opponents at love. Freshman Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and junior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories at third and fifth singles respectively. Sun bested Tricia Ashmore while Bryon defeated Alexa Manforti.
Marist got wins at first singles from Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) at second singles. Raynor notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kristina Paich, while McCarthy beat Marly Roche 6-1, 6-2. Junior Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) defeated Mallory Garbaravage 6-1, 6-4 at fourth singles.
The team got doubles wins from Raynor and Sun at first doubles. The pair defeated Paich and Allison Clay 8-3. McCarthy and sophomore Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) posted a second doubles win over Roche and Ashmore, 8-1. Byron and Lukin shutout Manforti and Danielle White, 8-0
Marist will return to the court on Saturday with semifinal action against the #3 Loyola. The match is slated to start at noon at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center. The Red Foxes notched a 4-3 victory over the Greyhounds during the regular season.
