JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist women's tennis team came up short in the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Finals as it dropped a 4-1 decision to #1 overall seed Fairfield. Marist got its lone singles win from sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) at second singles.
McCarthy defeated Paulina Rys 6-3, 6-4. She ends her sophomore season on a five-match winning streak in singles matches.
Marist (11-10) fell behind after it dropped the doubles point to open the match. In closely contested matches, Rys and Kristen Liu defeated Marist's Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) 8-6 at first doubles. The Stags clinched the point with a third doubles win. Michaela Cerrone and Meghan Sullivan bested juniors Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
When Fairfield notched its fourth point of the day, two singles matches were left unfinished. Sun led Liu 6-4, 4-6, 3-1, while Byron trailed Gretchen Amberg 6-2, 2-0. Sun's match was contested at third singles. Byron competed at sixth singles.
Sunday's match was moved indoors to the Yanitelli Center on the campus of Saint Peter's College as rainy conditions swept through the area.
The Red Foxes conclude their 2009-10 season with a record of 11-10 overall. The team amassed a 6-1 conference record, which was good for a second place finish in the MAAC.
