FISHKILL, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 4-3 loss to Army before 2,407 fans at Dutchess Stadium in the fifth annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic. A trio of Red Foxes - senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) and junior center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) - had two hits apiece.
Army scored once in the top of the second and once again in the fourth before the Red Foxes bounced back to tie the game in their half of the fourth. Singles by junior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Gallic gave the Red Foxes runners on first and second. With two outs, freshman third baseman Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) singled to drive home Pacione. When the relay throw was bobbled in the infield, Gallic raced home to tie the score.
Marist took the lead an inning later. Freshman first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls ,N.Y.) reached second base on an error, and then advanced to third on a single by Schwind. With two outs, Orefice scored on a wild pitch to put the Red Foxes in front for the first time in the game at 3-2.
The score stayed that way until the top of the eighth. Right fielder Shaun Wixted led off with a single, and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Brandon Hines, which tied the score at three. A two-out single by third baseman Steve May drove home catcher J.T. Watkins with what proved to be the winning run.
Marist had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the eighth. Schwind led off with a double to left, and advanced to third on a Pacione fly out to right field. Army then brought the infield in, and red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) followed by hitting a ground ball which was backhanded by Army shortstop Clint Moore, who then threw home to get Schwind out at the plate on a close play. Marist was unable to score the remainder of the eighth or in the ninth.
The Black Knights outhit the Red Foxes, 13-8, but also committed four errors to Marist's zero. For Army, Wixted, May and second baseman Zach Price had three hits apiece.
Ken Jackson (1-0) earned the win for Army, allowed just one unearned run and two hits in 3.2 innings of relief while striking out three. Kevin McKague came in from first base to get the final four outs for his 11th save. Freshman left-hander Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) took the loss in relief to fall to 4-1.
Marist will return to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes open up a two-game, home-and-home series with Central Connecticut State. The Red Foxes will host Friday's game at McCann Baseball Field, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
