Early Power Surge Lifts Marist Baseball To 7-6 Win Over Central Connecticut State

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Powered by solo home runs from freshman designated hitter Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) and junior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), the Marist baseball team earned a 7-6 win over Central Connecticut State in a non-conference game on Friday at McCann Baseball Field.

Senior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) went the first four innings to record the victory, running his record to 6-2 on the season. He did not allow a hit in his first 3.2 innings, and he struck out two while he allowed just one run. Junior left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) recorded the last five outs for his fourth save of the season.

Orefice began the scoring with his first collegiate home run, which came with one out in the bottom of the first. Blue Devils' first baseman Pat Epps tied the score with a solo shot in the top of the fourth, but the Red Foxes took the lead for good by scoring five times in the bottom of the inning. Schwind and Pacione led off the inning with back-to-back home runs, the third of the season for Schwind and first for Pacione. The score became 4-1 when freshman second baseman Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored from third. Freshman third baseman Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) to make the score 5-1. The Red Foxes made it 6-1 when Orefice's RBI single drove home Stuckey.

In the fifth, the Red Foxes expanded their lead to 7-1 when Gallic tripled to dead center and came home on an RBI groundout by senior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.).

Central Connecticut State scored once in the sixth, and then plated four in the eighth on two hits, two Marist errors, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Gallic finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Red Foxes. Orefice went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. The Red Foxes outhit the Blue Devils 10-6 on the day. For Central Connecticut State, Epps went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Central Connecticut State starter Tommy Meade (3-1) took the loss, allowing six runs, five of which were earned, in 3.1 innings. Derek Drag allowed one run over the final 4.2 innings in relief for the Blue Devils.

Marist improved to 25-16 overall; Central Connecticut State fell to 18-16. The Red Foxes and Blue Devils will close out their two-game home-and-home series tomorrow, when they play a single, nine-inning game tomorrow in New Britain, Conn. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
