NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Red-shirt sophomore left-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) combined on a shutout, as the Marist baseball team defeated Iona 6-0 in the finale of a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Salesian Field.
Gallagher started and went 6.1 innings to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the season as he lowered his ERA to 3.89. He scattered 10 hits, but did not issue a walk and struck out five. Bielak recorded the next three outs, and Zlotnick followed by getting the final two outs of the eighth. Chapin pitched the ninth and struck out two.
Offensively, sophomore center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, his second in the last three games. Schwind hit .636 (7-for-11) in the series. Senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Freshman first baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and freshman third baseman Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. In all, the Red Foxes stole four bases in the contest.
Marist opened the scoring in the first, as Curylo walked on four pitches to lead off the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pacione. In the second, Schwind led off with a home run to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Shank reached on a fielder's choice, and senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) walked to force Shank to second. The Red Foxes then pulled off a double steal, moving both runners into scoring position. Both Shank and Prano came home on a single to left by Curylo, giving the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead.
Red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) led off the fifth inning with a double, and scored two batters later on a double play to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 advantage. Marist closed out the scoring an inning later when Curylo drew another leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.), went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left by Pacione.
Marist has now defeated Iona 19 consecutive times. The Red Foxes ran their record to 14-10 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC; Iona now stands at 5-17 overall and 0-6 in the MAAC.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes travel to Holy Cross for a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
