Marist Drops Non-Conference Game At Central Connecticut State, 7-1

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 7-1 loss at Central Connecticut State in a non-conference game on Saturday. The contest was the back end of a home-and-home series between the teams, as the Red Foxes prevailed 7-6 at McCann Baseball Field on Friday.

Freshman first baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and red-shirt junior designated hitter Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4, with Pacione scoring the Red Foxes' lone run. The Red Foxes outhit the Blue Devils 10-8, but left 11 runners on base.

In the top of the second, Pacione led off with a single through the left side. After he advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a two-out single to right by freshman left fielder Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Central Connecticut State third baseman Mitch Wells slammed a three-run homer to right field to give the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead. Central Connecticut State expanded its lead by scoring twice in the third, once in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Central Connecticut State starter Jack Greenhouse went the first eight innings, scattering nine hits while allowing just one run and one walk while striking out four. Nick Nuemann came on in relief to toss a scoreless ninth. For Marist, red-shirt sophomore left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) went the first six innings and took the loss to fall to 4-2. Gallagher allowed six hits, six runs (five earned) and four walks and struck out two. Freshman right-hander Brett Houseal (Hempfield, Pa.) pitched the seventh and eighth innings. He gave up two hits, two walks and one run, and struck out two.

Marist fell to 25-17 on the season; Central Connecticut State improved to 19-16.

The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Fordham for a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
