BRONX, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team earned a 4-3 comeback victory at Fordham in a non-conference game on Tuesday. The Red Foxes trailed by three runs heading into the seventh inning, but scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth as they improved to 26-17 overall.
Freshman right-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) retired the side in the ninth on just six pitches to earn his fifth save of the season. Freshman left-hander Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) started for Marist, and went the first five innings. He allowed eight hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks, and recorded one strikeout.
Fordham scored all three of its runs in the fourth innings, and took a 3-0 lead into the seventh. Junior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) led off the seventh with a single, and then advanced to third on a single by senior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.). With one out, Gauck stole second, and then Gallic scored with Gauck moving up to third on a passed ball to make the score 3-1. An infield single by senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) brought home Gauck to cut the Red Foxes' deficit to one.
Marist trailed 3-2 in the eighth when red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) started a two-out rally with a single up the middle. Gallic and Gauck then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Freshman right fielder Mark Stuckey (Marietta, Pa.) then reached on an infield error, which enabled Nugent to score and tie the game at three apiece. Prano then singled up the middle to drive home Gallic with what proved to be the winning run. Although Gauck was thrown out at the plate on the play, the Red Foxes took a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bielak pitched out of a first-and-third with one out jam by recording a strikeout and inducing a groundout. McKeown then came on to pitch a perfect ninth.
Fordham outhit Marist 10-7, and the Red Foxes were aided by four Rams' errors. Designated hitter Angelo Ponte led Fordham by going 3-for-4. Prano, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, was the only Red Fox to enjoy a multi-hit game. Gallic scored two runs and went 1-for-3.
Dan Sorine (0-1) took the loss in relief for Fordham. Starter John Flanagan gave up two runs in 6.1 innings, as he allowed five hits and three walks while posting three strikeouts. Jordan Grangard pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Rams, who fell to 16-29.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host Stony Brook at McCann Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
