Marist Baseball Topples Stony Brook, 9-3

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team defeated Stony Brook by a score of 9-3 in a non-conference game at McCann Baseball Field on Wednesday. The Red Foxes drew 12 walks in the contest, and broke it open by scoring five runs in the seventh as they won their second straight.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman first baseman Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Junior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) went 0-for-1 but drew four walks, scored a run and stole his team-leading 14th base of the season.

Junior right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) started and earned the victory, which improved his record to 4-4. Chapin pitched a season-high 5.1 innings and allowed just four hits and one unearned run. He did not issue a walk, and struck out three.

The Red Foxes did not have a hit in the first four innings, but got on the scoreboard in its half of the first. Curylo drew a four-pitch leadoff walk, went to second on a successful sacrifice by Orefice, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore right fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.).

Gauck's double down the left-field line to lead off the Marist fifth was the Red Foxes' first hit, and it started a two-run rally. After a successful sacrifice from freshman left fielder Mark Stuckey (Marietta, Pa.) made moved Gauck to third, he scored two hitters later on a fielder's choice from Curylo. The Red Foxes ran their lead to 3-0 when Orefice's RBI single drove home Curylo.

Stony Brook scored once in the top of the sixth, but the Red Foxes scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, all of which came with two outs. Junior catcher Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) had an RBI single to put Marist up 4-1. Freshman third baseman Zach Shank (Marietta, Pa.) added a two-run single, and Gauck's two-run double closed out the Marist scoring.

Stony Brook starter James Campbell (0-3) took the loss despite not allowing a hit in his three innings work. He allowed two walks and one unearned run, and struck out two. Designated hitter William Carmona went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Seawolves, who fell to 19-22.

Marist improved to 27-17 with the victory. The Red Foxes will return to action this weekend, when they face Rider in a three-game series in Lawrenceville, N.J. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
