Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Marist volleyball team suffered a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-9) loss to Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes finished the Art Carmichael URI Invitational winless, but freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 52 kills over the team's three matches.

Marist (5-7) dropped the first set 25-19 despite holding an early 9-7 lead. Rhode Island tied up the set at 9-9 before going on a 10-2 run to take a commanding 19-9 lead. Marist would close to within four points, 23-19, behind a kill by Hill, but the Rams closed out the first set victory on a kill by Jill Anderson and a service ace by Rachel Zarazan.

The Red Foxes came out strong to start the second set, holding a 14-9 lead behind service aces from sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) and sophomore Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). Marist maintained the lead for the rest of the set, as it fended off several URI rallies including one that cut the Red Foxes' lead to 23-21. Marist eventually closed out the set on two Rhode Island attack errors to even up the match at 1-1.

Rhode Island (6-3) held the lead for much of the third set, including a 17-12 advantage at one point. Marist began to chip away, closing to within one point, 20-19, on kills by senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) and Hill. From there, Rhode Island went on to win the set, 25-22, on a kill by Zarazan.

With the fourth set tied 3-3, Marist took the lead for good on kills by Estes and Stoiberg and went on to win the set 22-12 to force a deciding fifth game.

Rhode Island never trailed in the fifth set, as Marist closed to within one point of the Rams six times, but could not take the lead. Holding a 10-9 lead, Rhode Island went on to score five straight points to claim the set and the match.

Senior Emily Brosky (Allentown, Pa.) and Hill led the Red Foxes with nine digs each in the match while Schmid finished with nine kills. Marist outhit Rhode Island .244 to .228 in the match.

Marist will begin its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule on Saturday, September 18 at 2 p.m. when it plays host to Niagara in a rematch of last year's MAAC title match.
