Stifling Defensive Effort Lifts Marist To 14-3 Triumph Over Bucknell

Sept. 11, 2010

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team defeated Bucknell by a score of 14-3 before 2,546 fans on Saturday night at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Marist defeated Bucknell for the first time in six tries in program history by holding the Bison to just six first downs and 159 yards of total offense.

Junior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) earned his first career victory as a starter by completing 25 of 39 passes for 251 yards. Reilly also threw a touchdown pass and did not commit a turnover. The 25 pass completions are a career high for Reilly, as well as the second highest total in program history.

Senior wide receiver James LaMacchia (Bronx, N.Y.) caught a career-high 11 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. The 11 receptions are just one off the program's single-game record.

Sophomore linebacker Isaac Sine (Chantilly, Va.) paced the Red Foxes' defense with nine tackles, including a sack and two for a loss of yardage. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.) added eight stops.

With 10:18 left in the second quarter, senior linebacker Kees Coughlin (New Rochelle, N.Y.) intercepted a pass and returned it nine yards to the Bucknell 18. Three plays later, Reilly threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to LaMacchia to open the scoring, as the play coupled with the extra point by sophomore kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) gave the Red Foxes a 7-0 lead.

Late in the third quarter, with Marist still up 7-0 and Bucknell facing a 3rd-and-9 form the Marist 14, Bison quarterback Brnadon Wesley ran for 13 yards to the Marist one. However, the Bison were unable to punch it in on their next three plays, and a field goal by Drew Orth cut Marist's lead to 7-3 with 51 seconds left in the period.

On Marist's ensuing drive, Myers kicked a 26-yard field goal to put the Red Foxes up 10-3, but Marist chose to take the points off the board when a personal foul was called against Bucknell. After a three-yard run by junior running back Matt Gray (Hillsdale, N.J.) put the ball at the one, junior running back Ryan Dinnebeil (River Vale, N.J.) went in for the touchdown. Myers' extra point made the score 14-3.

Following the touchdown, Bucknell went three-and-out on its final three possessions. The Red Foxes held the ball for the final 3:08, with junior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) running for two first downs to put the game away. McCoy led the Red Foxes with 54 yards on 16 carries.

For Bucknell, Wesley was 12-for-24 passing for 103 yards and one interception. He also led the Bison with 26 yards rushing on nine carries. Jamal Briggs led the Bison with 12 tackles.

Marist improved to 1-1; Bucknell fell to 0-2.

Marist will have a bye next week, and then will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, as the Red Foxes will host Morehead State in their Pioneer Football League opener. Kickoff is set for noon. For ticket information, contact the Marist Ticket Office at (845) 575-3553.
