Sept. 22, 2010

Box Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Six individuals from the Marist men's soccer team tallied a point in the Red Foxes' 3-2 road win against Hartwick on Wednesday night at Elmore Field. Sophomore Mike McGowan (Masuk, Conn.) goal in the 58th minute of the match. With the win, Marist (4-3) has strung together consecutive wins for the first time this season, and beat Hartwick for the first time in program history.

The Red Foxes' offense was paced by three different goal scorers including freshman James Curley (Clifton Park, N.Y.), junior Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) and McGowan, who scored a goal for the first time since Oct. 4, 2008 on Wednesday night. Additionally, it is the first time that six Marist (4-3) players etched their names in the box score since Oct. 8, 2006, in a 4-1 rout of Manhattan.

"I was proud of the resilience we showed this evening," Viggaino said after the match. "We went on the road in a hostile environment and picked up a good win against an historically strong program. As a team we played as a group tonight, and it shows the number of weapons we have on the team."

Curley and Witkowski notched goals 16:04 apart in the first stanza. The first of the year for Curley, his marker came in the 16th minute off a rebound from a Brossard shot.

Marist, who is ranked fifth in the NSCAA North Atlantic Region, increased the lead to two goals in the 32nd minute when Witkowski one-timed a cross from Fred Osborne (Trumbull, Conn.). With the assist, Osborne tallied his first collegiate point. Junior Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) was credited with an assist as well as he fed the ball to Osborne on the play.

Hartwick cut the two-goal lead in half at the 35:44 mark when Steven Amaya finished from 12 yards out. Jason Keefe left the ball for Amaya, who finished the play, and beat Marist senior goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.).

In the second half, McGowan tallied the eventual game-winning goal after he received a cross from Brossard. The feed went through the six-yard box and was finished by McGowan from close range.

The Hawks refused to go away and cut the deficit to one goal for the second time in the match in the 77th minute. Michael Cunningham scored Hartwick's (0-6-1) second goal of the match on a one-timer. He received a cross from the end line from Amaya and finished the play from 16 yards out.

Hartwick closed the match with eight shots in the final 12 minutes. Fortunately for Marist, Pilla made three saves during the stretch to keep the ball out of the net and ensure the Marist victory.

For the match, Marist outshot Hartwick 17-15. Additionally, the three goals matches the Red Foxes' season-high this was set on Saturday against Howard.

Pilla made five saves in the match, while Hartwick's Amaya led all scorers with three points on a goal and an assist.

The Red Foxes open up a two-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. Marist will host La Salle at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
