POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team improved to 4-5 Friday night with its second straight win, a 1-0 victory over the Bucknell Bison (1-10) at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The match was broken open in the 41st minute when freshman midfielder Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) scored her first career goal off of a direct kick.
The Red Foxes benefitted from stellar goalkeeping by senior Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.), who notched her 11th career shutout, and second in a row. She made three saves in the match. Balzarini is now only two shy of tying Mellanie Nai's career record of 14.
The win marked the sixth time this season Marist was involved in a 1-0 decision, and was also the second victory in a row of its kind for the Red Foxes as they defeated Lafayette 1-0 on September 19th.
The first half was played at a frantic pace as the two teams combined for 16 shots, 11 of which were fired by the Red Foxes.
Guiney notched her first career goal from about 23 yards away, after junior midfielder Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.) attacked the box and drew a foul against the Bucknell defense.
Balzarini displayed her leadership and experience throughout the second half, making tremendous saves in the 57th and 68th minutes. The Red Foxes' attack capitalized on her solid play and outshot the Bison 19-9.
Marist will look to extend the winning streak to three games on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Red Foxes will travel to New Haven, Conn. for their final non-conference match against the Yale Bulldogs.
