Marist Volleyball Sweeps Iona 3-0 Behind Hill's Double-Double

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team swept Iona, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) on Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. Freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) led the Red Foxes with a match-high 16 kills and 14 digs to help Marist snap a six-match losing streak in addition to earning its first conference win of the season.

Marist (6-9, 1-2 MAAC) got off to a fast start to begin the first set, building an early 8-1 lead. The Red Foxes maintained the lead for the rest of the set, despite having Iona close to within three points several times in the latter stages. Leading 23-20, Marist closed out the first set victory on two kills by sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.).

In the second set, Marist again held the lead for the majority of the game. The Red Foxes built an 8-5 lead, but saw Iona tie up the score at 8-8. From there, Marist regained the lead, 12-8, on a kill by Hill followed by three consecutive Iona attack errors. The Red Foxes would not look back as they went on to take the second set, 25-20 and hold a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a closely contested battle with 17 tie scores and seven lead changes throughout the game. Each team traded points for much of the set, and with the score tied 24-24, two Iona attack errors gave Marist the 26-24 victory en route to sweeping the match.

Estes finished with nine kills for Marist while junior Emily Brosky (Allentown, Pa.) tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Iona (8-5, 2-1 MAAC) received eight kills by Theresa Harvey and 16 digs by Allison Nieters in the losing effort.

For the match, Marist outhit Iona .212 to .117 in addition to holding a 41-31 advantage in kills.

Marist returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when it hosts Saint Peter's.
