DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Marist men's soccer team lost its first road match of the season in its opening match of the Davidson adidas Classic on Friday night. The Red Foxes fell 6-1 to the Davidson Wildcats. Junior Preseason All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) selection Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) scored Marist's lone goal.
Davidson was led by Yannick Pilgrim and Mark Milliard who each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Chip Sanders made five saves in the match.
The Wildcats struck first in the contest with a goal in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Witkowski leveled the score at one in the 31st minute. He was able to dribble around a defender and beat Sanders from 10 yards out.
Pilgrim gave the Wildcats the lead for good in the 42nd minute. After he took a long pass, he dribbled around Marist goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) and tapped the ball into the Red Foxes' goal.
Marist (1-1) was outshot 19-11 in the match and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Foxes will wrap up play at the Davidson adidas Classic when they take on Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 3:15 p.m. The match will be played at Davidson.
