Sept. 4, 2010

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After dropping three out of its first four matches to start the season, the Marist volleyball team won its third-straight match after defeating Holy Cross 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-11) on Saturday evening. Freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) recorded a double-double for the Red Foxes, finishing with 14 kills and 14 digs.

Marist (4-3) held a 14-10 lead midway through the first set after two kills by Hill and one by sophomore Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.). Holy Cross quickly responded with an 11-1 run to storm ahead 21-15. After a Liz Ashton kill gave the Crusaders a 22-17 lead, Marist began to chip away, tying the set at 22-22 on two kills by Hill. The Red Foxes went ahead for good on a Holy Cross attack error, and two more kills by Hill sealed the first set victory for Marist.

Holy Cross (3-4) led just once in the second set, as the Red Foxes overcame an early attack error to re-take the lead for good. Marist led by as many as nine points in the set, as it held off several Crusader comeback attempts, including one that cut the Red Foxes' lead to 22-19. But two Holy Cross attack errors and a Hill service ace gave Marist the 25-19 second set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Determined to close out the match, the Red Foxes never trailed in the third set. Leading 5-3, the Red Foxes scored 10 of the next 12 points, highlighted by kills from Harridsleff, sophomore Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) in addition to two kills by Estes to earn the victory.

Estes recorded double-digit kills for the Red Foxes, finishing with 10. Junior Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) tallied 11 digs for Marist, helping the Red Foxes maintain a 41-36 advantage in that category. In addition to holding a 40-26 advantage in kills, Marist outhit Holy Cross .286 to .052 in the match.

Marist will return to action tomorrow when it plays host to Holy Cross at 12 p.m.
