POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team defeated Holy Cross 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 18-25, 25-9) on Sunday afternoon behind a match-high 16 kills from senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas). The victory was the fourth straight for Marist and its second win over Holy Cross in as many days.
Marist (5-3) held a slim 8-7 lead over the Crusaders midway through the first set before kills by freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) and sophomore Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) gave the Red Foxes a 10-7 lead and some breathing room. Marist began to pull away from Holy Cross, maintaining a 17-12 lead before three consecutive kills by Schmid put Marist ahead, 21-12. The Red Foxes closed out the 25-13 first set victory on two Holy Cross attack errors.
The Red Foxes continued their strong hitting in the second set, as kills by senior Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Schmid gave the Red Foxes an 18-11 lead which they would not relinquish. Marist sealed the second set victory on a kill by sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) and held a 2-0 lead in the match.
Holy Cross (3-5) would not go quietly, however, as it took an 8-4 lead in the game's early stages in hopes of forcing a fourth set. After a timeout by Marist head coach Tom Hanna, the Red Foxes closed the gap to 9-8, but it was the closest they would come as the Crusaders responded with another run to take a 13-9 lead. Holy Cross eventually won the third set, 25-18, to force a fourth game.
With sophomore Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) serving, Marist began the fourth set with a 4-0 run on two kills by Hill and two Holy Cross attack errors. The Red Foxes took a commanding 16-4 lead over the Crusaders in the game behind two kills from Stoiberg and two Crusader attack errors. From there, Marist would go on to earn the fourth set victory by scoring the game's final five points to claim the match, 3-1.
Senior Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with 16 digs in the match.
Estes finished with a double-double for the Red Foxes, recording 11 kills and 11 digs.
