POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team led by as many as 48 points as it defeated the Saint Peter's Peahens 76-34 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Saturday night at the McCann Center. Junior guard Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) added 11 points and three steals. The Red Foxes shot 42.2 percent from the field en route to their eighth consecutive win.
Marist (12-2, 3-0 MAAC) shot 27-for-64 from the field in the game and 11 Red Foxes notched double-digit minutes. Senior center Maria Laterza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high nine points in the game and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Laterza shot 4-for-8 from the floor and added an assist and a steal. The Red Foxes outscored the Peahens 36-12 in the paint and scored 27 points off 24 Saint Peter's turnovers.
The Red Foxes opened the game on an 11-0 run over the first 3:39 of the contest. During the stretch, Marist got baskets from four different players - Yarde hit the first layup of the matchup, sophomore Kate Oliver (Sydney, Australia) sank a jump shot, Allenspach had a three-pointer and layup in transition and senior Élise Caron (Quebec, Canada) hit a pair of free throws.
Saint Peter's (1-13, 1-2 MAAC) hit its first field goal with 11:39 to go in the opening stanza on a layup by Quiana Porter to make the score 14-3. The Red Foxes responded with a 9-0 run which was capped at the 8:57 mark on a triple by Yarde. Her three-pointer made the score 23-3.
Marist held its largest lead of the stanza with 40 seconds remaining on an Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) layup. The score at the intermission was 41-13.
Over a span of 1:57 in the opening stages of the second half, Marist used a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 53-15. The run was capped by a transition layup by Caron. She scored eight in the game.
The largest lead of the game reached 48 points, 71-23, with 5:39 to play when O'Connor split a pair of free throws.
After it finished its longest homestand of the season, a three-game stretch, Marist will take to the road for a four-game MAAC road trip. The Red Foxes return to the hardwood on Monday, Jan. 10 at Loyola to face the Greyhounds, who are also unbeaten in MAAC play. Tip-off is slated for 11:30 a.m. at Reitz Arena in Baltimore.
Notes: Marist has won its first three MAAC games by an average of 29.3 points per game... It allowed a season-low in points (34), field goals made (12) and field goal percentage (.235)... Laterza scored a career-high nine points... The last time Marist led by more than 48 points in a game was against Loyola in the 2009 MAAC Tournament Quarterfinals on March 6...
