LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist women's soccer team was defeated at Rider by a score of 5-1 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Friday. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak as the Red Foxes suffered their first loss in conference play this season.
Rider opened the scoring just 25 seconds in when Abi Cottam got the Broncs on the board. However, at the 38:57 mark, the Red Foxes tied the score at one apiece when sophomore midfielder Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) scored on a free kick from approximately 35 yards out.
Cottam scored her second goal just before halftime at the 44:41 mark. The Broncs then put the contest away with three goals in a span of just over six minutes midway through the second half. Two of the tallies came off the foot of Jennifer Meier. Cottam and Meier each finished with two goals and an assist.
Marist held the edge in shots on goal (17-15) as well as corner kicks (4-3). Senior Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.), junior Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) and sophomore Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) each registered two shots on goal apiece. Rider goalkeeper Danielle Singson recorded nine saves.
Marist is now 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC; Rider improved to 9-4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, when they head to Loyola for a 1 p.m. contest.
