The teams played back and forth for several points and Manhattan (12-9 overall, 5-4 MAAC) eventually closed within three points at 16-13, but the Red Foxes responded with another 5-0 run to take a comfortable lead at 21-13. Marist held the Jaspers to just a .056 hitting percentage while hitting at a .220 clip themselves. Stoiberg led all players with six kills and the Red Foxes had four team blocks.

The second set began as a deadlock Burton solo block kick-started a 5-1 run that gave the Red Foxes a 17-13 lead. Foss had a kill and Burton and Stoiberg added a block in the run. After a Manhattan timeout, the Jaspers responded out of the break with a 5-2 run cut the lead to 19-18. Back-to-back kills by Gilbert and Foss cushioned the lead for Marist at 21-18. Another kill by Stoiberg and a block by Stoiberg and Gilbert got the Red Foxes within four, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the set. The Jaspers finished the set on a 5-1 run, winning 25-18.

Kills by Harridsleff, Foss, Hill and Gilbert, and a Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) service ace helped Marist jump out to a 7-4 lead in the fourth set. Manhattan worked to eventually tie the score at 10 before the two teams played at a deadlock until back-to-back points gave the Jaspers the lead for good at 19-17. Manhattan again closed out the set on a run, scoring the last five points after a block by Foss and Burton to win the frame and extend the match to a fifth and deciding set.
