INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.
- The Marist football team defeated Butler, 28-10, on Saturday in a Pioneer
Football League (PFL) game at Butler Bowl. Senior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) completed
21 of 24 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, senior cornerback
Jaquan Bryant (St. Albans, N.Y.)
intercepted two passes, and junior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) had one-and-a-half sacks.
After Marist's first drive ended with an interception,
Butler's David Lang kicked a 28-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead
just 2:50 into the game. The Red Foxes answered with a 12-play, 76-yard drive
which culminated in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Reilly to junior tight end Anthony Calcagni (Thornwood, N.Y.). The
Red Foxes would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Bryant's first interception of the game ended Butler's ensuing
drive. The Red Foxes then marched 68 yards on nine plays and scored on a one-yard
plunge by senior running back Matt Gray
(Hillsdale, N.J.). With just 31 seconds left in the half, Marist took a 21-3
lead following a four-yard touchdown pass from Reilly to senior wide receiver Byron Gardner (Victorville, Calif.),
which capped a 95-yard, eight-play drive. The key play of the drive was a 65-yard completion from Reilly to Calcagni.
The Red Foxes' final score came with 2:49 left in the
third quarter on a one-yard run by sophomore running back Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.) to give them a 28-3 lead. With 3:53 to
play, Butler scored the final touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Wade Markley to
Jeff Larsen.
Senior linebacker Ryan
Cronan (Hampton, N.H.) led the Red Foxes with nine tackles. As a team,
Marist had six stops for losses in the game, including two-and-a-half by Fede.
Offensively, Calcagni had a team-high 130 yards receiving on five catches.
Three Marist receivers - Calcagni, Gardner, and senior Kevin Fitzpatrick (Columbia, Md.) - had a team-best five
receptions. The Red Foxes ran for 148 yards, and freshman Emmanuel Onakoya (Waldorf, Md.) led a balanced attack with 47 yards
on 14 carries.
Marist is now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in PFL play; Butler
fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Marist will return to action next Saturday, when the Red
Foxes host PFL foe Drake. Kickoff at Tenney Stadium is set for noon. For ticket
