Marist Football Prevails At Davidson, 13-9

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Receiving contributions from all three phases of the game, the Marist football team won at Davidson, 13-9, in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest on Saturday. The Red Foxes snapped a four-game losing streak as they improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in PFL play.

The Marist defense, which entered the week first in the PFL in yards allowed per game, did not permit an offensive touchdown and held the Wildcats to just 226 yards of total offense. Linebackers Ryan Cronan (Hampton, N.H.) and Alexander Killian (Farmingdale, N.J.) led the way with six tackles apiece. A balanced Marist offensive attack was led by senior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.), who ran for a season-high 83 yards on 21 carries and the touchdown which put the Red Foxes ahead for good. Junior kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit two field goals, including a school-record kick from 49 yards out in the first quarter. Senior punter Kevin Pauly (Rochester, N.Y.) downed three of his seven punts inside the 20.

Myers' school-record field goal accounted for the first points of the game with 7:37 left in the first quarter. A 27-yard field goal by Davidson's Chazzo Habilston tied the score with 10:56 left in the second period. With 1:58 left before halftime, a 94-yard punt return touchdown by Toms Bernhards-Callahan put the Wildcats up 9-3. The extra point was missed as Davidson held a six-point lead going into halftime.

With 3:27 to play in the third quarter, a three-yard touchdown run by McCoy, coupled with Myers' extra point, put the Red Foxes in the lead for good at 10-9. Myers added a 22-yard field goal just 32 seconds into the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.

The Marist defense did not allow Davidson to cross midfield on either of its last two drives. The Wildcats had just 80 yards of offense in the second half. The Red Foxes held a 35:49-24:11 edge in time of possession, and held the ball for 19:23 in the second half.

Davidson fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in PFL play. Quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff was 26-for-39 through the air for 215 yards and an interception. Marist held Davidson to just 11 rushing yards on 16 attempts.

Marist returns to action next Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Campbell in a PFL contest. Kickoff at Tenney Stadium is set for noon. Ticket information is available online at GoRedFoxes.com, and by calling the Marist Ticket Office at (845) 575-3553.
