Volleyball Bounces Back With Big Win Over Canisius

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist had a .392 hitting percentage as a team and recorded seven total team blocks in a bounce-back 3-0 win (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at McCann Arena.

Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) had match-highs with 15 kills and 10 digs while also hitting at a .586 clip. Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) had eight kills and hit .429. Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had 24 and 21 assists, respectively. Stoiberg and Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) had six total blocks apiece.

A kill by Harridsleff and a service ace by Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) put them ahead 2-1, the Red Foxes did not trail for the rest of the set. After Canisius tied it on a kill by Olivia Chrzanowski, Marist went on a streak of six consecutive points to take a commanding lead. A kill by Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.), block by Stoiberg and Burton and service ace by Brady contributed to the streak. The Red Foxes had expanded their lead to 17-10 when Burton went on a three-point run with two kills sandwiched around a solo block. The teams traded points until Gilbert closed the set 25-15 with a kill. The Red Foxes hit at a .346 clip for the set and Burton led the way with four kills.

The second set started out as a deadlock, with the score tied at eight and neither team grabbing a lead of more than two. The Golden Griffins would go on a 10-4 run however, taking an 18-12 lead. Consecutive side-outs left the score at 21-16 in favor of Canisius when the Red Foxes got hot, scoring the final nine points to come back and steal the set 25-21. In the run, Foss had a service ace, Hill had three kills, Burton had a kill and teamed with Stoiberg for two more blocks. Hill had eight kills in the set and Marist had a team .350 hitting percentage.

The Red Foxes carried the momentum into the third set, scoring the first four points on kills by Harridsleff and Hill and back-to-back service aces by Stoiberg. Canisius fought back to tie the score at 16, but a kill by Foss kick-started a five-point streak for the Red Foxes, that included another block by Stoiberg and Burton, the fifth time the duo teamed up in the match. The teams went back and forth for a few points until Harridsleff finished the match with a kill. Foss and Hill each had six kills and the Red Foxes hit at an astound .484 clip.

Marist hits the road for a pair of matches next weekend when they play at Saint Peter's on Saturday and Manhattan on Sunday. Both matches scheduled for 2 p.m.
