UNCASVILLE, Conn. - With
a strong effort in the second half, the Marist Men's Basketball team picked up their
first win on the young 2011-12 season with a 60-47 victory over Radford in the
consolation game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun
Arena. Freshman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Devin Price
(Inglewood, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
The first six minutes of the game saw Marist (1-3) fall
behind quickly as Radford (3-3) jumped out to as much as an eight point lead at
10-2 at 14:01. Led by two Lewis baskets, the Red Foxes cut into the deficit and
brought the game within two at 10-8 by the under 12 timeout at 11:38.
During the next four minutes of game action, both offenses
nearly stalled as freshman Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted the lone point
on a converted foul shot. With back-to-back made free throws by Lewis, Marist
was able to make the game 12-11 at 7:22. The Red Foxes finally evened it up at
18-18 with 2:59 remaining in the first half after senior R.J. Hall (Bloomfield,
N.J.) drove into the paint and quickly shot a pass out to Pieter Prinsloo
(Johannesburg, South Africa), who spotted up on the right wing and sank a clean
three-pointer.
Hall netted the Red Foxes final basket of the half as he
secured a defense rebound and quickly transitioned down the court to score a
fast break layup with three seconds remaining.
At the half, Marist was ahead 22-20 behind eight points for both
Lewis and Price. As a team, the Red Foxes shot 38.9 percent (7-18) from the
field versus Radford's 34.5 percent (10-29). At the foul line, Marist converted
seven of their 10 attempts, while the Highlanders failed to register an
attempt.
Building off a scoreless final 2:33 of the first half, the
Red Fox defense smothered Radford for an additional 4:51 after halftime. During
this 7:24 period of play, Marist was able to run off 11 unanswered points.
Radford was able to cut into the nine point lead for a short
time with consecutive made baskets at 15:09 and 14:29, but the Red Foxes were
up to the task, as they quickly responded and got the lead into double digits
at 10 with 13:11 remaining in the game following an Anell Alexis (Hillsborough,
N.J.) layup. The red-shirt sophomore was an especially important asset for
Marist in the second half as he registered all seven of his points.
With a 10-point lead, the Red Foxes never looked back and
held a double-digit advantage over the final 12:02 of the contest.
At the 1:06 mark their lead expanded to a game-high 17
points after consecutive Hall free throw makes.
Overall in the second half, Marist shot 66.7 percent (12-18)
from the field and also at the foul line (12-18), while holding Radford to 34.6
percent (9-26) on their field goal attempt.
For the game, the Red Foxes had shooting percentages of 52.8
(19-36) on field goals, 42.9 (3-7) on three point attempts and 67.9 (19-28) on
foul shots.
With a combined two points out of their top three leading scorers,
Lewis and Price combined for 33 points. Starting at the shooting guard
position, Price shot 5-9 with one three pointer and five free throw for 16
total points, while Lewis led a strong effort from the Red Foxes' five bench
players with 17 points on 5-11 shooting and seven free throws. As a whole, the
bench unit scored nearly half of the team's 60 total points with 29.
The Red Foxes will now head home to the newly-renovated
McCann Arena, where they will host Bucknell in their home opener on Tuesday,
Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
