Marist Football Downs Valparaiso On Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team earned a 30-7 win over Valparaiso in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday. On a day when the Red Foxes honored their senior class prior to kickoff, senior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) ran for 116 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, and senior wide receiver Kevin Fitzpatrick (Columbia, Md.) caught six passes for 111 yards and two scores.

The Marist defense forced five turnovers and held Valparaiso to just 183 yards of total offense. The Red Foxes also recorded three sacks, 10 tackles for losses, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Senior linebacker Ryan Cronan (Hampton, N.H.) led the effort with a team-high eight tackles, which included three for losses, to go along with a sack.

Marist ran for a season-high 195 yards, and held the ball for 35:14. Junior kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) kicked three field goals.

McCoy's 15-yard touchdown run, which came the play after he had a 43-yard run, was the first score of the game just two minutes in. However, Valparaiso tied the score following a five-yard touchdown pass from Eric Hoffman to Cole Anderson.

The score remained tied at seven apiece after the first quarter before Marist scored the final 23 points of the game. A 35-yard field goal by Myers with 9:24 left in the second quarter gave the Red Foxes the lead for good, and senior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) connected with Fitzpatrick on a 28-yard scoring strike just 1:12 before halftime.

Myers connected on a 33-yard field goal early in the third quarter to put the Red Foxes up 20-7, and Reilly found Fitzpatrick for another score - this one covering 32 yards - with 7:37 left in the third quarter. A 21-yard field goal by Myers with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter accounted for the game's final points.

Marist is now 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the PFL; Valparaiso is 0-9 and 0-6 in league play. Safety Laurence Treadaway led the Crusaders with 14 tackles, a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

The Red Foxes will close out their season on Saturday, Nov. 12 at San Diego. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. EST.

Notes: Myers entered the game with three field goals made this season; he's now 6-for-7 on field-goal attempts. ... Senior RB Ryan Dinnebeil (River Vale, N.J.), who had missed the team's last three games due to injury, and senior LT Stephen Carretta (Washington Township, N.J.), who had missed the team's  prior four games due to injury, were both in the starting lineup. Dinnebeil rushed for 19 yards on six carries. ... Freshman CB Vinny Fuschetto (New Providence, N.J.) and sophomore LB Dave Incle (Aberdeen, N.J.) each had the first interception of their careers. ... All five Marist QBs in uniform took snaps in the game. Reilly was relieved by senior Michael Gentile (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the third quarter, who went 4-for-6 for 43 yards. Sophomore Duell Smith (Hilton, N.Y.), sophomore Anthony Varrichione (Medway, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Loussedes (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) played the team's last three series.
