BUFFALO, N.Y. - Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, but it was not enough as the Marist volleyball team lost in straight sets to Canisius (13-25, 15-25, 26-28) Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Canisius' Koessler Athletic Center.
Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had nine kills and 17 assists and Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) finished with 11 assists. Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) had a team-high 11 digs.
The Red Foxes (11-14, 8-7 MAAC) jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first set, thanks to a 4-1 run that included a Zywick service ace and a kill by Stoiberg. Kills by Hill, Foss, and Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) helped Marist maintain a one-point lead at 9-8, but Canisius (12-14, 7-8 MAAC) would go on a 15-3 run to essentially put away the set. Stoiberg had four kills to lead the Red Foxes and Harridsleff had two.
The second set started out much like the first with a block by Stoiberg and Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.), two kills by Hill and one by Harridsleff helping the Red Foxes take an early 5-2 lead. Canisius responded again however, using a 9-2 run, including seven straight at one point, to grab the lead at 11-7. Two kills by Foss and one by Hill closed to the deficit to three at 13-10, but the Golden Griffins went on another run of five straight and 8 of 10 to expand their lead to 21-12. Foss and Harridsleff had back-to-back kills to give the Red Foxes hope, but Canisius scored four of the final five points to win the set.
After the Golden Griffins scored the first three points of the third set, Marist responded with a streak of six consecutive points to take a 6-3 lead. Hill had two kills, Foss and Stoiberg each had one and Burton had back-to-back blocks, one each with Stoiberg and Hill. Three kills by Foss and two consecutive service aces and a kill by Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) expanded the Red Foxes' lead to 16-8. A Canisius 8-4 run cut the lead to 20-16 before a kill by Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) and another Russo service ace ended the streak. The Golden Griffins scored the four straight points however, and six of seven to cut the lead to one at 23-22. After an attacking error gave the Red Foxes set point, Canisius scored the next three, and four of five, to flip the table and give them a set point of their own at 26-25. Stoiberg brought Marist back to even with a kill, but Canisius scored the final two points to win the set 28-26 and the match.
Marist will play Niagara tomorrow at 2 p.m. in their final road match of the regular season.
