BOSTON, MASS. - The Marist women's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting effort, falling to Boston University 49-36 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Case Gymnasium.
Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with 12 points. Corielle Yarde (Reading, Pa.) had nine points and 11 rebounds. Yarde also added a team-high three blocks and Danella had two to go along with four steals as Marist played well defensively as a team with eight blocks and ten thefts.
The game started well as Yarde hit a three-point on the first possession of the game. Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) added another trey as the Red Foxes (4-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held the Terriers (5-4) off the scoreboard for the first four and a half minutes.
The shooting would go cold from there however. Boston University went on a 26-10 run over the remainder of the half, holding the Red Foxes scoreless for long stretches of time, and took a 26-26 lead into the locker room.
Marist shot just 19.2% (5-26) in the first half, and was only 2-13 from three-point range. Yarde was the only player to hit more than one basket, leading the team with seven points and eight rebounds at the break.
The second half did not see much change unfortunately, as the Red Foxes did not make a field goal over the first 12 minutes of the period. In that time, Boston University expanded their lead to 24 points at 41-17.
Danella sparked an 18-8 run to end the game, scoring ten of her points over the final ten minutes of the game. After a couple of free throws, Danella finally broke the Red Foxes' scoring drought, hitting the team's first field goal with a short jumper that closed the score to 41-22 with 7:55 left to play. She then hit a three-pointer and, after being fouled while shooting from behind the arc, hit all three free throws to cut the deficit to 15 at 47-32.
The Red Foxes will break for exam week before continuing their stretch of four consecutive games on the road when they travel to St. Bonaventure for a noon game on Sunday, Dec. 18. Their next home game will take place after Christmas when they host Kansas State on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
