Men's Basketball Falls In MAAC Opener To Loyola 76-63

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist men's basketball team (2-5, 0-1 MAAC) fell in their MAAC opener in a road matchup at Loyola (5-1, 1-0 MAAC) by a score of 76-63. In tight game throughout the majority of the contest, a late 10-0 run sealed the Red Foxes' fate. Freshman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led the team with 16 points.

Play began with the Greyhounds jumping out to an early 5-1 lead in the first 92 seconds of play before Marist responded with a 7-0 run on the strength of an Isaiah Morton (Richland, N.J.) three pointer and layups by Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) and Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.).

With the score 8-5 in Marist's favor at the first media timeout at 15:44, the pace of play picked up exponentially as the teams combined for 21 points before the next stoppage at 10:33. During this 5:11 span of play the Red Foxes extended their lead to as much as seven points following an Anell Alexis (Hillsborough, N.J.) three point basket at 11:47. At the timeout, Marist held a 20-14 lead.

The Red Foxes continued leading the game until a three point basket by Justin Drummond flipped the advantage to Loyola at 4:37. The teams traded the lead five times before the halftime intermission. Price highlighted the offensive play down the stretch of the half as he took a Morton pass and cleanly sunk a three pointer to give his squad a two point margin, less than eight seconds after the Greyhounds' Shane Walker had done the same.

At the half, the Red Foxes were ahead by a score of 33-32. Price and Lewis led Marist with seven points a piece. Sophomore Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) also had a strong half with a game-high three blocks, he also added four points and three rebounds.

The teams continued swapping the lead over the first 8:44 of the half as neither squad was able to pull away by more than three points. At this point, Loyola took a lead at 49-48 that would last the final 11:16 of the game.

Freshman Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was able to keep the Red Foxes close as he scored six consecutive points on three point baskets to bring the game to 66-60 at 3:51. Unfortunately for Marist, Loyola would go on a 10-0 run over the next 3:35. Lewis converted his first three pointer of the season with 11 seconds remaining to bring the final score to a close at 76-63.

For the game, both teams posted similar percentages with Loyola holding slight advantages in field goal percentage at  41.3 percent (26-63) to 41.1 (23-56), in three pointers at 53.3 (8-15) to 50.0 (7-14) and free throws at 64.0 (16-25) to 62.5 (10-16). The one statistical category that led to Marist's defeat was a 47-32 disadvantage in total rebounds and a 25-13 deficit in offensive boards.

Individually, Lewis led two Red Foxes in double figures with 16 points; Price was the second with 11 points. Kemp finished with team-high totals of seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Morton led the team with four assists.

Marist will host Rider in their MAAC home opener with a Sunday 2 p.m. matchup at McCann Arena.
