JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Marist baseball team recorded its first win of the 2011 season on Saturday with a 5-1 triumph at East Tennessee State. Marist starter Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) combined for 14 strikeouts as the Red Foxes evened their record at 1-1.
Gallagher, a red-shirt junior lefty, fanned a career-high 10 in 5.2 innings to earn the victory. He allowed just five hits, three walks and one run. Chapin, a senior right-hander, struck out four in 3.1 innings and allowed just one hit to pick up the save.
Sophomore first baseman Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) hit his second home run in as many games, and senior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
East Tennessee State scored in its half of the first, but the Red Foxes took the lead for good with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth. Orefice singled to start the inning, and scored on an RBI groundout by junior shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) to tie the score at one apiece. Nugent followed with a solo home run to put Marist up 2-1.
Marist then added three runs in the sixth. Orefice and Pacione led off with back-to-back singles, and then Schwind walked to load the bases. Nugent then drew a walk to force home Orefice and give the Red Foxes a 3-1 lead. Sophomore right fielder Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, which plated Pacione to put Marist up 4-1. The Red Foxes cored their final run when freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Schwind.
Bo Burton, who went the first five innings for East Tennessee State and was charged with all five Marist runs, took the loss. Right fielder Andrew Green paced the Buccaneers offensively by going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Marist and East Tennessee State will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon. Senior right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) is the Red Foxes' scheduled starter.
