Marist Water Polo Notches 2-1 Record On Day Two Of Marist Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's water polo team went 2-1 on Sunday, the second day of the Marist Invitational, to conclude the weekend 3-1 after it notched wins over DDO and Harvard. The Red Foxes fell to #15 Hartwick as well. Marist came from behind to defeat DDO 11-10, bested Harvard 13-10 and fell to Hartwick 15-11.

DDO jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first game through one quarter of play. The Red Foxes closed to within one, 5-4, after back-to-back goals by freshman Katherine Farley (Wilton, Conn.) and senior Kirsten Siegel (San Diego, Calif.) scored the equalizer with seven seconds remaining in the second period.

The teams traded spurts of 3-0 runs to make the score 10-10. With 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, sophomore Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) scored the game-winner to lift Marist to an 11-10 win.

Harvard, who began the season with six straight wins, scored four of the game's first five goals to take a 4-1 lead on Marist with 4:41 to play in the first quarter. The Red Foxes clawed to within one by halftime as senior Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored three goals, while sophomore Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.).

Junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) scored two third quarter goals to help the Red Foxes gain its biggest advantage of the match, a three-goal margin. The score was 10-7 with 3:45 remaining in the third period.

The Crimson closed to within one goal, 11-10, with 2:47 to go, but Marist closed the game with back-to-back goals to arrive at the final score of 13-10.

#15 Hartwick jumped out to a 12-4 halftime lead and never looked back in the final game of the tournament. The Red Foxes got as close as four goals, when Yuriria Chaves (Chicago, Ill.) scored a goal with 11 seconds remaining in the contest.

On the day, Konopka tallied seven goals, all of which came against Harvard and Hartwick. Pauli and Puccino each added five goals apiece.

Marist returns to the pool on Feb. 26-27 at the ECAC Championship. The tournament is hosted by Bucknell University. The Red Foxes will first play Maryland in the bracket-style tournament.
