WILMINGTON, N.C.--The Marist baseball team dropped its final game of the Hughes Bros. Challenge on Sunday, as the Red Foxes suffered an 8-1 loss to Miami (Ohio). The Red Foxes took two of three games in the Hughes Bros. Challenge, and now stand at 3-3 overall.
Senior catcher Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and a stolen base. For the weekend, Gallic hit .667 (8-for-12) with four doubles and three stolen bases.
Marist scored its lone run in the top of the second. Gallic reached on a one-out double, and after he advanced to third on a single by freshman left fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.), he scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore right fielder Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.).
Miami of Ohio answered with six runs in the bottom of the second, which came with the benefit of just two hits. The RedHawks added single runs in the fourth and fifth.
First baseman Kyle Weldon led the RedHawks by going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Miami of Ohio outhit Marist by a 9-7 margin.
Tyler Melling earned the victory for the RedHawks, allowing one run in six innings. Senior right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) took the loss and fell to 0-2.
Marist will return to action next weekend with a three-game set at Richmond. The teams will open the series at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
