Final Stats
HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis squad won their first match of the spring season, 5-2 at Colgate University on Saturday. Facing off against the Raiders from the Patriot League, the Red Foxes were led by Erin McCarthy and Joana Sun, both of whom picked up victories in singles and doubles competition.
Playing in the number one singles match, junior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) defeated Colgate's Stephanie Bender in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4. McCarthy also collected a victory in doubles while teaming with senior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.). In the number two matchup, they defeated the Colgate team of Kelsey Shea and Stephanie Brown by a score of 8-6.
Sophomore Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) collected her victories in the third singles match and number one doubles. In singles action, she defeated Colgate's Stephanie Brown in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. In doubles, Sun teamed with sophomore Kelsey Raynor (Garden, N.Y.) to defeat Colgate's Stephanie Bender and Alex Petrini, 8-5.
Freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) and Senior Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) also were victorious for Marist on Saturday. Campbell won the fourth singles matchup with Colgate's Kelsey Shea, 6-1, 6-4, while Lukin won the sixth singles match over Colgate's Alexi Aberant, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marist will return to action Saturday, February 19 when they travel to Albany, to face off with the University of Rhode Island in a neutral site matchup.
