DOVER, Del. - The Marist baseball team defeated Delaware State by a score of 11-4 on Sunday, as the Red Foxes completed a three-game sweep of the Hornets and have now won sixth straight. Marist totaled 14 hits in the victory, as five Red Foxes enjoyed multi-hit contests.
Junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.), senior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior designated hitter Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.), sophomore shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) and freshman right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) each drove in two runs apiece, while Schwind, Gallic and Nugent drove in two runs apiece.
On the mound, red-shirt junior left-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.). Red-shirt senior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) allowed an unearned run in the ninth, but struck out the side to finish out the game.
Marist started strong with five runs in the top of the first. With none out, Gallic drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Schwind with the Red Foxes' first run. Nugent followed with a two-run single to scored sophomore first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Pacione. Shank and Berry followed with sacrifice flies to put Marist up 5-0.
Delaware State scored three times in its half of the first, but the Red Foxes then scored four runs in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. Shank and Berry each drove in runs with bunts, while McQuail added an RBI single and Schwind had an RBI groundout. Marist added single runs in the seventh and ninth on an RBI fielder's choice by Gallic and RBI groundout by Pacione, respectively.
Marist improved to 9-3; Delaware State fell to 3-11.
The Red Foxes will continue their road trip on Tuesday, when they start a two-game series at Towson. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
