TOWSON, Md. - Junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and sophomore right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) pitched six strong innings to earn his first win of the season as the Marist baseball team defeated Towson by a score of 9-4 on Wednesday. The victory was the Red Foxes' eighth straight.
Schwind paced a 12-hit Marist attack. Senior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and now has multiple hits in each of his last four games. Freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
On the mound, Houseal allowed just four hits, two walks and one run while striking out five in his first start of the season. He improved to 1-1.
Marist struck first with three runs in the top of the second, all of which came with two outs. McQuail's RBI single scored sophomore shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.), and Schwind's two-run single plated both McQuail and freshman right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.).
McQuail started another Marist rally in the fourth when he was hit by a pitch and stole second, before coming in to score on an RBI double by Schwind to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead. In the fifth, McQuail's two-out RBI single brought home Shank - who had moved into scoring position after stealing second - to put Marist up 5-0.
Marist added two runs in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Sophomore first baseman Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) drew another walk to force home Orefice. Schwind then scored on a double play as the Red Foxes went up 6-0.
Towson scored once in the sixth, but the Red Foxes fought back with two in the eighth. With one out, an RBI triple by Gallic scored Pacione, and Nugent followed with a single to bring Gallic home as the Red Foxes took a 9-1 lead. Towson then scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth.
Center fielder Ben Winter paced Towson by going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. The Tigers finished with eight hits. Towson starter Mike Volpe (1-2), who started and went the first two innings, took the loss.
Marist is now 11-3 on the season; Towson fell to 4-11-1.
