ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) hit two home runs, and red-shirt junior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) allowed just three hits and one run over eight innings as the Marist baseball team cruised past George Washington by a score of 10-5 on Saturday. The win was the 10th straight for the Red Foxes.
Schwind finished his day 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) each drove in a pair of runs apiece.
Gallagher improved to 4-0 on the season. He struck out three and walked just one while throwing just 92 pitches in his outing.
Marist broke the contest open early with three runs in the first and four in the second. A two-run triple by Pacione drove home Orefice and Schwind to open the scoring. In the second, Orefice's two-run single brought home Helmrich and Welsh to put Marist up 5-0, and Schwind followed with a two-run shot to stake the Red Foxes to a 7-0 advantage. In his next at-bat, Schwind homered to lead off the fifth.
The Red Foxes closed out their scoring in the seventh. A two-out single by Gallic plated Orefice, and Gallic himself came around to score following a throwing error on a single by sophomore shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.).
George Washington scored four times in the ninth, but junior right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.) induced a double-play ball to end the game.
The Red Foxes outhit the Colonials, 12-6. George Washington catcher Jimmy Best hit was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Joe Richardson (0-4), who started and went four innings, took the loss for the Colonials.
Marist is now 13-3 on the season; George Washington fell to 6-13. The Red Foxes and the Colonials close out their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
