POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team defeated Fairfield 5-2 at McCann Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series. Senior right-hander Kyle Putnam (Newburgh, N.Y.) won his third straight start, while sophomore first baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Marist scored twice in the bottom half of the first inning. Shank's single drove home senior catcher Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) from second, and an errant throw in the infield enabled senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) to come home with the Red Foxes' second run.
Both sides shared scoreless innings for the next three frames, until the Stags tied the score at 2-2 following a Tyler Wosleger two-run single with one out in the top of the fifth inning. The Red Foxes reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out, RBI double by Orefice, who advanced to third base on the throw to home plate. With two outs in the inning, Pacione drove in Orefice on an RBI double to the gap in left-center field, extending his hitting streak to 13 straight games and extending Marist's advantage to 4-2.
Marist added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Schwind that scored Orefice to round out the scoring and give the Red Foxes the 5-2 lead.
Putnam went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out four, to improve his record to 3-2 on the season. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and retired 11 in a row after issuing a leadoff walk in the first.
The Marist bullpen, led by Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.), Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) and Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.), allowed just one Fairfield batter to reach base on one walk in 3 2/3 innings of relief. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Chapin closed the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Red Foxes will return to the diamond Tuesday, March 29 when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to take on Bryant University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
