SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 3-1 loss at Bryant in a non-conference game on Tuesday. Junior designated hitter Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Sophomore right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.), who gave up just two hits and one unearned run over the final three innings while striking out one.
The Red Foxes scored first in the fourth inning. Nugent singled with one out, and advanced to second on a passed ball. He then scored on a double by Helmrich.
Bryant took the lead with two runs in its half of the fifth on a two-run single by center fielder Jordan English, and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Brian O'Neil (2-2) started and went the first seven innings for Bryant to earn the victory. O'Neil gave up six hits, one walk and one unearned run while fanning five. Mark Andrews pitched two hitless innings to pick up his fifth save.
Marist fell to 16-5; Bryant improved to 10-12.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. contest. Freshman right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) is Marist's scheduled starter.
