POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On Senior Day, a 6-1 victory over MAAC foe Siena propelled the Marist women's tennis team to its tenth win of the season. The win marked Marist's fourth conference win of the season. Junior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) was one of five Red Foxes who posted two victories on the day for Marist.
At first doubles, sophomore Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and McCarthy ousted Nicole Ross and Jasleen Sandhu 8-2. In the second slot, sophomore Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) teamed with freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) to defeat Carly Holloway and Danielle Crill 8-5. At the final position, the senior duo of Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) downed Elora Benfer and Brittany Filip 9-7.
In the first two singles positions, Red Foxes won in straight sets. Raynor beat Sandhu 6-2, 6-1, while McCarthy defeated Crill 6-0 and 6-4. In the third slot, Sun rebounded from a first set loss to win her match against Holloway 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. At fourth singles, Campbell beat Jessica Asselin 3-6, 6-2, 10-5, while Junior Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was defeated by Ross 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 at fifth singles. In sixth singles, Lukin won her second match of senior day, defeating Benfer 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.
Before the match, a short ceremony was held to honor the four graduating senior members of the squad: Lukin, Byron, Juliana Boas (Curitiba, Brazil), and Joanna Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.).
Marist will close out its season at home on Sunday against Loyola at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion. The MAAC Championship will be held next Wednesday and Thursday April 20 and 21 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
