POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team finished its regular season strong with a 5-2 win over Loyola at the Marist Tennis Pavilion on Sunday. The Red Foxes finished the regular season at 11-7 overall and 5-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competition.
Marist swept doubles, with junior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and sophomore Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) defeating Rachel Janasek and Joy Johnson 8-3. At second doubles, sophomore Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, N.Y.) and freshman Marielle Campbell (Paterson, N.Y) downed Scarlett Hoy and Judy Lite 8-6. In the final slot, the senior duo of Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) beat Tiffany Ash and Andie Keyser-Baker 8-4.
In singles, Janasek avenged her doubles loss to Raynor, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the number one slot. At second singles, McCarthy beat Sabrina Fedele 6-2, 6-2. In the third and fourth slots, Sun and Campbell handled their opponents with ease. Sun beat Hoy 6-2, 6-0, while Campbell defeated Johnson by the same score. At fifth singles, Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.), fell to Lite 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the afternoon's closest singles match. In the final slot, Lukin defeated Ash 6-4, 6-3.
The Red Foxes will be the number two seed in this week's MAAC Championships at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., and will have a re-match with third seeded Loyola on Wednesday. The winner will advance to Thursday's championship match.
