Final Stats

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team, seeded second in the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Tennis Championship, defeated third-seeded Loyola by a score of 4-3 in a semifinal match on Wednesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Marist took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At first doubles, junior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and sophomore Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) earned an 8-4 victory while the senior tandem of Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned a 9-4 triumph.

McCarthy was the lone Red Fox to earn two victories on the day, as she also prevailed at second singles, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) won 6-2, 6-1 at third singles, while freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 victory at fourth singles.

With the win, Marist has advanced to the MAAC final for the second straight year, and sixth time in the last seven years. The Red Foxes will face top-seeded Fairfield in Thursday's championship match, which will start at 8:30 a.m. In the regular season meeting between the teams, the Stags earned a 4-3 home victory on April 7.

A win over Fairfield would clinch Marist's third berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes also advanced to NCAA play in 2007 and 2008.
