Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Freshman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to score junior Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) with the game-winning run as the Marist baseball team earned a 3-2 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday in a non-conference game at McCann Baseball Field.
The Red Foxes trailed 2-0 entering the eighth. Red-shirt senior Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single. After the next two batters were retired, junior Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) kept the inning alive by drawing a walk on the eighth pitch of his at-bat. Helmrich was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nugent then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1, as all runners moved up a base. Freshman Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) then hit a ground ball deep in the hole that Binghamton shortstop John Howell made a diving stop on, but was unable to make a play as Schwind scored to tie the game. McQuail followed with a hard single through the left side to plate Helmrich with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
McQuail and Welsh each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Marist used six pitchers in the contest, five of whom were not scored upon. Junior right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Sophomore right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) started and went the first three innings without allowing a run.
Binghamton outhit Marist, 10-9. Four Bearcats - Howell, C.J. Lukaszewski, Corey Taylor and Mike Thompson - had two hits apiece. Thompson's RBI single in the fifth drove home the first of the Bearcats' two runs in the inning.
Alex Ademi (0-2), who was charged with all three Marist runs in the eighth, took the loss for Binghamton.
Marist is now 23-12 overall; Binghamton fell to 13-18.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, as the Red Foxes begin a three-game conference series at Saint Peter's with a doubleheader starting at noon.
