FISHKILL, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team recorded a 15-7 triumph over Army in the sixth annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic on Wednesday before 2,422 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Red Foxes drew 12 walks and were hit by five pitches in the contest, and freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) drove in five runs to pace the Marist offense.
Sophomore right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.), who struck out four. Senior right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) needed just five pitches to close the game with a scoreless ninth. Marist pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts on the night.
For the Red Foxes offensively, McQuail went 2-for-4 and added a run scored. He drove a run with a fielder's choice in the first, and had two-run singles in the third and sixth. Red-shirt senior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with three runs scored, two walks and two hit by pitches. Junior designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Marist jumped out to the early lead in the first, as the Red Foxes scored five run on just one hit and batted around. The Red Foxes added two more runs in the third, also on just one hit. After Army scored three times in the fifth, Marist broke the game open by scoring six times in the sixth. In that inning, the Red Foxes had just three hits and batted around again. The Red Foxes scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, and Army plated four in the seventh.
Army starter Thomas Casey (0-4), who got pulled after 1/3 of an inning, took the loss. Clint Moore paced the Black Knights (18-21) offensively by going 2-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Marist improved to 26-13 overall. The Red Foxes will be back in action this weekend, when they host Niagara in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series at McCann Baseball Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday. Play both days will start at noon.
