LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) tossed seven shutout innings as the Marist baseball team earned a 13-1 victory at Bucknell on Tuesday in a non-conference game. The Red Foxes amassed 10 hits and 16 walks as they scored in each of the first seven innings.
Bielak allowed just three hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts. He improved his record to 1-1 while lowering his ERA to 3.20. It was the longest outing of his career. Freshman right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) closed out the game by going the final two innings.
Offensively for Marist, all nine starters reached base safely, with all drawing at least one walk. Junior designated hitter Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.), senior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior second baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) scored two runs apiece, while freshman right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs.
Marist scored four runs in the first three innings of the contest without the benefit of a hit, as the Red Foxes drew eight walks and scored on four RBI groundouts. The Red Foxes broke the game open by scoring five times in the fourth before the Bison could record an out. The big blow in the inning was a two-run triple by Helmrich, which brought home Nugent and sophomore shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.). An RBI single by Helmrich in the sixth scored Gallic to put Marist up 10-0.
After the Red Foxes added another run in the sixth, they added two more in the seventh to go up 13-0. Making a pinch-hitting appearance, freshman Eric Molinaro (Kingston, N.Y.) had the first hit of his collegiate career, a double which brought home Welsh. Molinaro then came in to score when Gallic reached on a throwing error.
Taylor Runge (0-2), who went the first 1.2 innings for Bucknell, took the loss. The Bison received two hits apiece from David Duffett and Will Mooney, and had six hits in the game. Mooney tripled in the ninth innings and scored Bucknell's lone run when he came home on an infield single by Matt Busch.
Marist improved to 20-6 overall; Bucknell fell to 12-17.
The Red Foxes will face their second Patriot League opponent in as many days on Wednesday, when they host Holy Cross at McCann Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
