Marist Men's Soccer Ties Fordham, 0-0

BRONX, N.Y. - In a Wednesday evening non-conference matchup, the Marist men's soccer team (4-2-2) tied Fordham (3-3-1) in a scoreless 110 minute battle. Grad student Steve Skonieczny (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) led the defense as he made five saves for his third shutout of 2011, while junior Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) took five shots with three on goal to head the Red Fox offense.

Marist and Fordham came into the contest with contrasting styles and each had chances during the 110 minutes to play their type of game; Marist, an aggressive attacking style and Fordham, a defensive, slower pace.

The game began with the Red Foxes pressuring the Fordham zone as seniors Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) and Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) registered shots during a five minute span of play from the 13th to 18th minute. Witkowski's attempt was a hard shot that Fordham's goalkeeper Ryan Meara saved.

Marist continued controlling the pace as Brossard, Szabo and junior Josh Faga (Rochester, N.Y.) registered three more shots for the Red Foxes. It wasn't until the 36th minute that Fordham was able to get a shot off.

At the half, Marist had a 6-2 advantage in shots taken, each credited with one shot on goal.

In the second half, Fordham got more offensive and began attacking the Red Fox defense with more sustained possessions. 32 seconds in, the Rams got their first corner of the game and put a header on goal that Skonieczny corralled.

Brossard had a great opportunity in 59th minute to put the Red Foxes on the scoreboard as he took a pass over the top of Fordham's defense and flicked the ball at the net only to be denied by Meara. He had a second shot on goal nine minutes later as he found space after beating his defender one-on-one only to have Meara stymie him once again.

Fordham had a few other scoring chances in the second half and managed to register six shots, three of which were on goal, but Marist still controlled their fate late. In the 83th minute, Witkowski dribbled in from 30 yards out and took a hard, low shot that Meara got his hands on. After 90 minutes, Marist had taken 10 shots with four on net to Fordham's eight and four on goal.

In the first overtime period, each team had an attempt at the win, Fordham's coming first in the 93rd minute as Julian Nagel took a shot, that was blocked. Brossard was the manufacturer of Marist's opportunity as he got a shot towards the net that barely missed high.

The second 10 minute period again saw back and forth play. Brossard and Witkowski took shots on goal that Meara saved, while Fordham had three shots towards the goal, though only one tested Skonieczny.

At the conclusion of the overtime periods, the game went final at 0-0 and the Red Foxes had earned their third clean sheet of the season.

For the match, Marist outshot Fordham by a 14-12 and held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Skonieczny made five saves in collecting his third shutout.

After the game head coach Matt Viggiano remarked that "this was a good way to come back after a poor performance in our last game. Overall, we had the better chances on the offense. Defensively, it was great to get the clean sheet."

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they travel to Hartford for a 7 p.m. matchup.
