Red Foxes Open MAAC Play With Win At Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio) scored a game-high 11 points, on 5-7 shooting from the floor, and the Marist women's basketball team came back from a late 10-point deficit to beat Saint Peter's College 56-54 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Yanitelli Center.

The Red Foxes (6-6, 1-0 MAAC) trailed 48-38 with 7:20 left to play when they began their late surge. Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) hit a layup and then converted two free throw attempts to get things started. After Saint Peter's (0-12, 0-1 MAAC) brought their lead back up to eight, Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer and Gang made back-to-back layups on assists by Dulin to bring the Red Foxes within one at 52-51 with 3:56 to play.

Both teams went scoreless over the next couple of possessions, but with 2:30 remaining on the game, Kelsey Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) was fouled and went to the line where she made one out of two to tie the game at 52. On their next possession, after a Peahens' miss, Beynnon picked up an offensive rebound and put it back up while drawing another foul. She converted the three-point play to give Marist the lead at 55-52, their first lead since 32-30 earlier in the half.

Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) made one out of two free throws in the closing seconds to help seal the win.

Danella finished with 10 points off of the bench. Beynnon and Dulin each had eight and Corielle Yarde (Reading, Pa.), who just hours before the game was named the MAAC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, had seven and six assists. Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y) had six points and a team-high six rebounds. Ockenden, Dulin and Yarde all had four rebounds apiece.

It was a slow start for the Marist offense in the first half as they committed 10 turnovers in the opening period and trailed 11-6 with 13:40 remaining in the half. The Red Foxes would use a 12-0 run after that however, to take an 18-11 lead with 7:31 time left in the first half. Danella had seven points in the run on a three-pointer, layup and long jumper. Emma O'Connor also contributed with a layup and Gang converted on a three-point play.

Saint Peter's immediately began to claw back at the Red Foxes' lead, closing within three at 22-19 before Yarde hit a three-pointer to bring the lead back to six with under two minutes to play in the half.

A made jump shot by Saint Peter's in the final minute brought the score to 25-21 at the half. Danella led all scorers with seven points at the break.

The Red Foxes return to McCann Arena on Wednesday night for a tilt against Canisius. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Marist will conclude the week by returning to the state of New Jersey to take on Rider at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Notes - Monday made 13 straight wins for the Red Foxes over the Peahens... Head Coach Brian Giorgis is now 19-3 in his career against Saint Peter's... Marist has won 25 consecutive MAAC contests, including the postseason, dating back to the 2009-10 season.
