POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team suffered a 17-14 loss to Butler in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) game on Saturday at Tenney Stadium.
Senior linebacker Mike Hagemann (Vernon, N.J.) led Marist defensively with 13 tackles, including four solo stops, and a pass break-up. Sophomore cornerback Vinny Fuschetto (New Providence, N.J.) had nine tackles, including seven solo stops, and two pass break-ups. Senior safety Nick Mainiero (Croton, N.Y.) reigstered eight tackles, a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss.
Offensively, junior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) was 15-for-28 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Michael Rios (Miami, Fla.) led the Red Foxes' receiving corps with four receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. Fifth-year senior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) led Marist on the ground with 63 yards on 15 carries.
Butler scored first with 8:01 left in the first quarter when Trae Heeter scored on a two-yard run to cap a 10-play, 96-yard drive. Marist tied the score on its ensuing drive when Looney hit senior tight end Anthony Calcagni (Thornwood, N.Y.) with a two-yard touchdown pass. That play capped a seven-play, 68-yard drive, and was set up by a 44-yard pass from Looney to sophomore wide receiver Joe Tralli (Croton, N.Y.).
With 4:57 left in the second quarter, Butler took a 14-7 lead as quarterback Matt Lancaster threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Shannon. The score remained that way at halftime, but Marist tied the game with 10:59 left in the third quarter on a 42-yard scoring pass from Looney to Rios.
With 56 seconds left in the third period, Butler kicker Jon Treloar hit a 20-yard field goal to account for the game's final points. Butler held the ball for 10:00 of the fourth quarter, and was 4-for-4 on third-down conversions. Marist did not get the ball inside the Butler 30 in the final 15 minutes.
Butler outgained Marist, 438-326. Lancaster finished with 314 total yards, as he was 24-for-33 passing for 241 yards, and ran 12 times for 73 more yards. Heeter had 112 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown, and Shannon finished with 10 catches for 106 yards and a score. Defensively, linebacker Jordan Ridley had a team-high 12 tackles, and defensive end Jeremy Stephens had 11 tackles, including two-and-a-half sacks.
Butler improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in PFL play. Marist is now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the PFL. The Red Foxes will return to action next Saturday at Drake. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
